Peeing with the big dogs....
Hi- Been a long time since my last blog - have been very busy and am still - so this is a very short note. All's fine here in the South of Thailand. Am working hard teaching summer classes to a private local toy company and teaching the teachers here how to prepare to take a language proficiency test. Am editing course materials, and making my own also. Have adopted a sweet doggie, Lola, and spend my time sneaking her in and out of my apartment and making her comfy in her tarped shelter by the teachers' office building.
Also, made the news last week. Was on the Thailand television stations out of Bangkok and in the paper too I guess although I did not know about any of it until a couple of days later. It so happens that the last Prime Minister (before the current and now newly ex PM) grew up in my town of Trang. So, during holidays he comes home to his lovely house in the city. This past week was a big holiday called Songkran and is a time when we pay respects to those elders and important people. Pooh and Go, my colleagues decided we should go and see the visiting PM and they just happen to know him, so off we went. I had no idea that they knew him and that it was quite an intimate event. I was expecting crowds of people and that we would me just another face in the crowd but I was very wrong. We had breakfast there ( they made food for everyone who came) and then his brother (and secretary) had us go and meet with him. He was VERY nice, spoke good English and asked quite a few questions of me. We gave him flower wreaths and poured scented water over his hands and he said he would call and invite me to dinner. Well, I can't imagine he will, but nice thought anyway. Then, after that, I saw the mayor of the town who I had met before while doing a provincial summer camp. He was very nice at that time and so I went to him and introduced myself again and he gave ME a wreath and poured water over MY hands. WOW, what a compliment. So, we had photos taken and the PMs brother said he would send us copies which I wile try and put on the blog somehow. So, a day of peeing with the big dogs....
